Jane A. Bennett retired from her position as Athletic Director/Assistant Principal for Huron High School after 25 years of dedicated service in 2003. Jane received her BA in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1970, and her MPH in Biostatics, also from UM, in 1975. JaneÕs tenure with Huron began as Coach for Varsity Softball (1977-1990), continued as Teacher of Mathematics (1978-1988), and Co-Director of Athletics (1978-1988). JaneÕs achievements at Huron are extensive, and she has been recognized for excellence by her peers with numerous national and state honors and awards. Key achievements include: doubling student participation in HuronÕs interscholastic athletic program between 1993-2003; increasing the number of athletes qualifying for scholar-athlete recognition by 115% in the same interval, while initiating a program to recognize athletes whose grades improved; directing the efforts of the athletic booster club to become an IRS 501 (C) 3 charitable foundation and establishing a designated athletic endowment fund within the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, while achieving a 6-fold increase in booster club membership. Jane played a key role in the successful campaign to gain voter approval for a $60 million bond, which included $20 million to improve and expand athletic facilities. She then contributed to the planning and oversight of multi-million dollar construction projects including the natatorium, stadium, classrooms, and auditorium renovation. Jane is the current recipient of a U.S. Department of Education Smaller Learning Communities grant (2004-09) for Hellgate High School in Missoula, Montana where she has served as Principal since 2003. While at Huron, Jane was honored as the National Athletic Director of the Year in 1998 by the National Council of Secondary School Athletic Directors, and received the Thomas E. Frederick Award of Excellence from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in 2000. |
