John U. Bacon, class of 2007

John U. Bacon graduated from Huron High School in 1982. As a Huron student, John made the honor roll, served as the senior class vice president, and was the only Huron student to take both Humanities and Homebuilding. He also played three years on the hockey team, which made it to the Final Four in 1982, his senior year. After earning two degrees from the University of Michigan, John won national awards writing feature stories for The Detroit News and free-lancing for Time, ESPN Magazine and The New York Times, among others. He has written five books, the most recent with the legendary Bo Schembechler. In 2000, John and his staff took over a 0-23-3 Huron hockey team, and through the hard work of the parents, assistants and players, broke the school record for Most Improved Team each of the next two years with marks of 7-17-1 and16-9-2. In 2002-03, the Rink Rats posted a 17-4-5 record and a .810 winning percentage, the best in school history, completing one of the most dramatic turn-arounds in Michigan high school history. When John stepped down in 2004, the last three Huron teams had won 47 total games and each season earned a team GPA above 3.0 Ð both school records Ð all based on two simple philosophies: ÒWork Hard, and Support Your Teammates.Ó GO RATS!
